The HYCC is a 105,000 sq. ft. full service community center that primarily services the youth of the Town of Barnstable which includes the school district’s athletic departments, after-school programs, hockey and figure skating competitive organizations and community groups, and the estimated 2,500 children whose families reside within a one-mile radius of the facility. The Mission of the HYCC is to provide state-of-the-art accessible facilities for a variety of recreational programs and special events, competitive sports organizations, after-school activities and opportunities for the community at large to foster educational excellence and physical growth across all generations. Amenities include twin NHL size rinks, a 12,500 sq ft wood floor gymnasium, locker rooms, multiple function rooms and catering. The HYCC is available for daily rentals or long-term contract.

HISTORY OF THE HYANNIS YOUTH & COMMUNITY CENTER PROJECT The Hyannis Youth and Community Center (“HYCC”) was designed by Bargmann, Hendrie + Archetype, Inc. and constructed by general contractor J.K. Scanlan, Company Inc. Situated in the heart of Cape Cod’s commercial hub, the building is two blocks from Main Street and a 90-minute drive from Boston, MA; Newport, RI; and Provincetown, MA. The Barnstable Municipal Airport, Hyannis Transportation Center and ferries to Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket are nearby and the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority has incorporated the HYCC Stop into its regular bus route.

Since opening in September 2009, the HYCC has become a major center of activity, providing programs and special events for visitors from all over Cape Cod and beyond. Some of the events have included the Cape Cod Hockey Classic featuring Colgate University Men’s hockey team in their neutral site season opener against West Point. The Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference partnered with the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce to bring 18 teams for the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association Championship Tournament. The international 2nd Nations Cup (the first of its kind to take place in the United States) and US Figure Skating Theatre on Ice Nationals brought thousands of skaters from as far away as Russia, France and Australia and teams from California, Texas, Ohio, Florida and New England. Hockey East called the facility home to host its Women’s Championship Tournament four years in a row and many other groups including USA Boxing, local gymnastics and wrestling, antique shows, craft fairs and fashion shows have used the facility for their tournaments, special events and meetings! These events continue to bring millions of dollars in new revenue to the region during the traditional “off-season”. The facility has received accolades from local business owners and community leaders who recognize the impact the project has made, enhancing the quality of life for regional residents and visitors.

Considered the “Jewel of Cape Cod,” and recipient of the 2011 Massachusetts Recreation and Park Association Annual State Award in the Field of Design of Facility, the modern building and its landscaped campus has been further accentuated by a downtown beautification effort that includes new street lights, wider sidewalks and bicycle lanes from Route 28 to the facility. Friendly staff greet members and visitors in the bright and expansive lobby, where they can access affordable programs and low cost memberships offering after school activities in the youth center, a multi-seat computer room, as well as integrated programs for the physically and mentally challenged.

Staff offices are spread throughout the facility providing supervision of visitors in all sections of the center. A sound and PA system runs throughout the ADA accessible facility. The 12,500 sq. ft. air-conditioned wood floor gymnasium, adjacent to the youth center, accommodates a competition basketball court with two full cross courts and portable seating for 500 spectators along with an elevated three lane walking track offering daily early morning to late night access.

The state-of-the-art “green” technology at the HYCC includes computerized HVAC, refrigeration and lighting control systems. State-of-the-art low wattage lighting fixtures, motion sensing switches and variable light levels provide for energy conservation. PV solar panels have been installed on a south facing roof and permitting for a future wind turbine were incorporated into the design and construction. A 65 Kv cogeneration system is in the conceptual design stage awaiting funding which will further energy conservation measures by using the heat generated by the system to provide the making of hot water for the zambonis and preheating of hot water for the facility showers.

The Hyannis Youth and Community Center broke ground on January 18, 2008. The $25.6 million project was funded by a $3.5 million grant from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, a $1 million grant from the United States Department of Education, $1.34 million of private fundraising through the Hyannis Youth and Community Center Foundation and the balance of $18,863,283 was from Town of Barnstable borrowing authorization and unexpended funds. Additional property was added to the site along Stevens Street to accommodate needed parking. The building meets the requests of members of the general public and the Barnstable Youth Commission, who spoke favorably on the project, which is placed by design in the area of Town with the greatest need. The Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Memorial Skating Rink was demolished after 52 years of service to make way for additional parking at the new facility and the completion of the attractive landscaped site which serves as the gateway to the downtown district. Center ice of the Kennedy Skating Rink has been marked with a special granite marker. The completed project is a facility of which Barnstable residents are extremely proud!

ENTERPRISING NEW FACILITY

When the Town of Barnstable made the commitment to build the HYCC, the consensus of the building committee and town officials was to establish an enterprise account which means the facility needs to generate enough revenue through ice and other rentals, special ticketed events, advertising and resource management to allow the building to become self-funded. The building operates under the Community Services Department. Now businesses, community groups, residents and visitors can all take advantage of the facility’s resources. Several programs and ticketed events are being developed that will supplement the revenue generated from traditional use of the various elements of the facility.
