UPDATE: September 10, 2021
The Town of Barnstable promoted two successful summer seasons for the small and local businesses on Hyannis Main Street in the face of a pandemic that altered access and normal activity over a 14-month period. In response, there has been positive feedback from merchants and visitors regarding the efforts by Town staff in the Planning & Development, Licensing and Public Works Departments to accommodate small businesses by allowing outdoor dining and retail, converting public parking to social distancing space and collaborating with community organizations to create events and activities that attracted visitors and residents, who felt safe and comfortable with the added space-making concrete barriers that were installed each summer that allowed for expanded outdoor public areas and dining space.
The Town of Barnstable will be removing the barriers on Hyannis Main Street starting Wednesday, September 15 and continuing Thursday, September 16. The work will occur at night, weather permitting. Businesses and restaurants with expanded outdoor dining or outdoor business areas should remove any personal property to allow the Department of Public Works to have access to clear the area. Restaurants that had outdoor dining areas prior to the COVID-19 State of Emergency may revert to using the previously permitted footprints. For questions regarding outdoor dining areas, please contact the Licensing Division. Questions can be directed to Elizabeth Jenkins, AICP, Director of Planning & Development at Elizabeth.Jenkins@town.barnstable.ma.us or call 508-862-4678.
