· Late Monday morning was a perfect day for a mini golf challenge at the Strokes of Genius golf course on Main Street Hyannis. The golf course is a summer long fundraiser for the Barnstable Education Foundation (BEF), which helps defray out of pocket costs for teachers who run special projects and programs that are not covered by the annual school budget. Team Town Hall and Team Main Street BID went at it, for bragging rights and support for the BEF. Featured below are the victors -Team Town Hall with myself and host of Barnstable Today Nick Cortese and BID Executive Director Elizabeth Wurbain and Resource Development Director Amanda Converse. We wish the Barnstable Education Foundation much success with this innovative fundraiser!
· On Tuesday, we installed new solar panels at the administrative building at the Marstons Mills Recycle Center (Town landfill). The panels were funded through a grant from the Mass Technology Collaborate (BTC) Clean Energy grant ($31,000) and $3,300 is anticipated from the Commonwealth Solar II Rebate Program. The panels will produce 3542 KWh annually.
· On Tuesday at the Town Council Agenda meeting the following items were placed on the agenda for the August 5, 2010 meeting: a return of the Craigville District of Critical Planning Concern Implementation Regulations; Acceptance of a grant of $400 for the Barnstable Youth Services Division; Acceptance of a grant of three lifeguard tower canopies; and two new ordinance proposals, one regarding Sandy Neck and the other regarding residential vehicle storage. · The twelfth Barnstable Harbor community meeting was held at 8 AM this morning at the Dolphin Restaurant in Barnstable Village to discuss the rebuilding project at the Barnstable Harbor Bulkhead. DPW Director Mark Ells reviewed Project Construction Update # 12. Assistant Harbor Master, Eric Shufelt, covered the operations at the harbor. · This Sunday is the 25th Annual POPS by the Sea Concert on the Hyannis Village Green. The Boston POPS Esplanade Orchestra under the director of conductor Keith Lockhart is making its only Cape Cod appearance and always puts on a wonderful performance. The guest conductor this year is Rachael Ray. Tony Award winner and cast member of Glee, Idina Menzel, will be performing. Award winning actor Chris Cooper will give life to the words of John, Robert, and Edward Kennedy doing readings from their speeches to Peter Boyer’s composition of The Dream Lives On. A very special thanks goes to Arts Foundation of Cape Cod Director Maggie Van Sciver and her legion of hundreds of volunteers that make this event happen each year!
· The sixteenth session of Inside Barnstable Town Government, A Citizens Leadership Academy will begin September 8, 2010 and run through November 18, 2010. The academy is an eleven week commitment with the goal of educating the citizens of Barnstable about the operations of town government, while also obtaining valuable feedback and participation from those citizens attending the academy. The program is designed to advance understanding of, and participation in, civic affairs as well as to increase awareness of the challenges facing municipal government. Most classes will be on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 – 9:00 PM and will be held in various locations throughout the Town. The Academy also includes a bus tour of the seven villages. The classes will be conducted by Town staff and provide interactive learning experiences, group discussions and site tours. The program is free of charge and class size is limited. Please register early to avoid the wait list. Applications are available at the Town Manager’s Office, 367 Main Street, Hyannis or online at www.town.barnstable.ma.us. Beach stickers now on sale at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center. Stickers may be purchased Monday through Saturday, 9AM to 4 PM and on Sundays and holidays, 9 AM to Noon. Be sure to bring in your car registration for verification purposes.
