Can I order a birth certificate over the phone?

No, we do not utilize credit cards at this point.  All orders for birth, death or marriage documents must be done by mail or in person with the payment of $10.00 up front.  (A request form can be found on this website – any mail requests need to have a self-addressed, stamped envelope with it).

I was born in Attleboro, can you give me a copy of my birth certificate?

No, you must request your birth certificate from the town or city where you were born.  Death certificates are recorded in the community where the person died.  Marriage documents are recorded in the town where the individuals applied for their license - not where they got married.

Why do I need a business certificate?

Any individual, partnership or corporation doing business under a name, other than their own name or incorporated name, must file a business certificate.  The certificate costs $30 and is good for 4 years.  You need to come in to the Town Clerk’s office; fill out a routing slip and after getting sign offs from 3 departments as directed, a business certificate is issued.

Is this the City of Hyannis?

We are the Town of Barnstable, and we have 7 villages in the town:  Hyannis, Centerville, Osterville, Cotuit, Marstons Mills, West Barnstable, and Barnstable.  The Town of Barnstable has a city form of government, but we are called the Town of Barnstable.

Who are your Selectmen?

Since we have a city form of government, we do not have selectmen and do not have town meetings.  We have a Town Manager, John Klimm and 11 councilors, 1 from each of the former 11 precincts in the community.  As of November 2003, 13 councilors will be elected to represent the 13 precincts that came out of the re-precincting after the 2000 Federal census.  The Town Council meets the first and third Thursday of each month with the exception of July and August, where they meet only once.  Extra workshops, and hearings are posted.

Can I register my dog by mail?

Yes you can. You need to send us: a copy of your dog’s rabies vaccination certificate which shows that the shot is up to date, and also shows if the animal is spayed or neutered, along with a self-addressed stamped envelope and a check for $7.00 for each dog that is spayed or neutered; or $10.00 for each dog that is not spayed or neutered. The licensing year runs from July 1 - June 30; and those tags are available for sale normally the first week in May. Post card reminders will be sent to all currently registered or recorded dog owners in April. If you are new to the community, you must register your dog with the Town Clerk’s office before the end of 30 days. If you are late doing this, or late registering your dog (after July 1) you may be subject to a $5.00 late fee from August – Dec. and a $10.00 fee from January to June. You must license the dog each year, if you skip a year you will have to pay for any skipped year's license and the late fee prior to obtaining the current license.
