The portion of the groundwater system from which water supply wells draw their water are called Zones of Contribution (ZOC). ZOC's are regulated and controlled to protect the public from adverse impact on the quality of out drinking water supply. ZOC's cover more than 20 % of the Town Barnstable.

Zones of Contribution (ZOC) are subdivided into three categories. Zone I, II, III. Zone 1 is a 400-foot protective radius around public water supply wills. Zone II is that portion of the groundwater which contributes water to a well under the most severe pumping (pumping 24 hours a day at full capacity) and recharge conditions (no precipitation for 180 days). The figure below illustrates Zone IIs. Zone III is all areas up gradient of Zones I & II.

The water supplies within ZOC's are basically replenished by either rain/precipitation or water discharge by residents through septic systems or irrigation. Over 85% of the Town uses private septic systems for wastewater disposal, accounting for a large portion of wastewater/irrigation recharge. To put this into perspective, precipitation accounts for 60% of recharge, the treatment plant accounts for 2% or recharge, and private septic systems and irrigation account for 38% of recharge. Thus, the water from our private septic systems, lawns, gardens, parks, and golf courses, that filters back into our groundw3ater represents a significant portion of out drinking water supply. This is why it is vital to keep chemicals, oil, and other toxics out of our septic systems and to reduce or even eliminate the use of pesticides and fertilizers.

Four water suppliers provide public water within six of the seven villages of Barnstable.
They are as follows:
Water
Suppliers
Villages
Served
Number of Wells
(existing)
Permitted Capacity
(gallons per minute)
Barnstable Fire District Barnstable 4 2,450
Barnstable Water Company Hyannis 12 8,100
Cotuit Fire District Cotuit 5 3,050
C-O-MM Fire District Centerville, Osterville, Marstons Mills 19 9,515

The figure does show a potential future Zone II for West Barnstable which parallels Route 149, but at this time no public water service is available in West Barnstable. The northwest portion of the Town is by far, the largest area without public water supply. Areas in the northern portion of the C-O-MM Fire District also lack public water supply. There are also isolated areas in Osterville and around Lake Wequaquet where public water is not available. Residents in these areas use small private wells for water supply.
