Joshua's Creek Improvement Project

An Important Companion to the Stewart's Creek Restoration

The Conservation Division is pleased to report that the Joshuas Creek Improvement Project is underway. Four Points by Sheraton Hyannis Resort has constructed a state-of-the-art stormwater detention basin to intercept and treat its parking lot runoff before it discharges to Joshuas Creek. Typical detention basins are simply stone-lined pits. Four Points hired the consulting firm of Beals and Thomas, Inc. to design an actual wetland basin. This project is one of several that will improve the water quality and restore wetland habitat along the Joshuas Creek and Stewarts Creek corridor. The Army Corps of Engineers will be enlarging the culvert under Ocean Avenue through which Stewarts Creek empties into Hyannis Harbor. They will also dredge the mouth of Stewarts Creek. Both of these projects will increase tidal flushing of the estuary.

The Town of Barnstable continues to sewer neighborhoods along the west side of Sea Street. This will lower the amount of nitrogen entering Stewarts Creek from private septic systems.

The 725 Main Street Committee continues to plan improvements to this parcel of land formerly occupied by an abandoned service station. Further improvements and amenities are being planned for the site.
