Affordable Housing

Affordable housing is one of the most important issues currently facing the Town of Barnstable and its residents. Studies have consistently shown that in recent years a lack of affordable housing is a major prohibitive factor for talented workers to stay and/or locate in the area.

Community Development staff, together with the Housing Committee, is dedicated to encouraging and facilitating the production of new affordable housing and the preservation of existing affordable housing throughout the Town of Barnstable.

The staff administers the Accessory Affordable Apartment Program (AAAP), meets regularly with developers seeking to create new housing, and actively participates with the Zoning Board of Appeals in the review of Chapter 40B Comprehensive Permit proposals (the state statute which allows the waiver of local regulations to build affordable housing).
